The refrigerator light came on at 1:17 in the morning.
There was one can left.
No glass. No ice. No reason to make anything of it.
The tab opened louder than expected.
The first sip arrived cold and clean, then opened into something more difficult to hold still. For a moment it seemed familiar. Not obvious. Just near enough to recognition to make the second sip feel necessary.
That was the beginning.

The first answer did not last.
The can rested on the counter for a moment. A thin ring of condensation formed beneath it.
Another sip followed.
This one did not replace the first. It added to it.
Something brighter appeared, then something darker behind it. A note that had seemed clear a moment earlier shifted slightly and made room for another. The flavour did not narrow into a single answer. It widened.
That was better.
Not because it became easier to understand.
Because it became more interesting.

Nobody agreed.
Someone walked into the kitchen.
"What's that?"
The can changed hands.
One sip.
A pause.
Then a guess.
Another guess came after it, nowhere near the first.
Neither sounded wrong.
Neither sounded complete.
The can came back. Another sip followed. Then another. Each answer seemed convincing for a second, until the next one arrived and moved the whole thing slightly out of place again.
Nobody agreed.
That seemed to be the point.
Some drinks tell you the same thing from beginning to end. This one kept finding new ways to say it.

Another sip. Another answer.
By then, the can had been sitting out for a few minutes. The metal was still cool in the hand. The flavour had simply opened further.
What felt immediate at the beginning now seemed quieter, and something that had been hiding in the background stayed a little longer. Not long enough to explain itself. Just long enough to make the next sip feel earned.
Nothing had been lost.
It was the same drink, only less in a hurry.
The kitchen was quiet except for the refrigerator humming behind them.
Another minute passed.
The can was lighter now.
By the last sip, nobody was trying to name it anymore.
That was not defeat.
It was the better outcome.
Some flavours are improved by certainty.
Others are improved by staying just beyond it.
The door closed.
The can was empty.
Nobody had agreed.
That seemed right.
